The Meaning of Discourse
In linguistics, discourse refers to a unit of language longer than a single sentence. The word discourse is derived from the latin prefix dis- meaning away and the root word currere meaning to run. Discourse, therefore, translates to run away and refers to the way that conversations flow. To study discourse is to analyze the use of spoken or written language in a social context. Discourse studies look at the form and function of language in conversation beyond its small grammatical pieces such as phonemes and morphemes. This field of study, which Dutch linguistà Teun van Dijk is largely responsible for developing, is interested in how larger units of languageââ¬âincluding lexemes, syntax, and contextââ¬âcontribute meaning to conversations. Definitions and Examples of Discourse Discourse in context may consist of only one or two words as in stop or no smoking. Alternatively, a piece of discourse can be hundreds of thousands of words in length, as some novels are. A typical piece of discourse is somewhere between these two extremes, (Hinkel and Fotos 2001). Discourse is the way in which language is used socially to convey broad historical meanings. It is language identified by the social conditions of its use, by who is using it and under what conditions. Language can never be neutral because it bridges our personal and social worlds, (Henry and Tator 2002). Contexts and Topics of Discourse The study of discourse is entirely context-dependent because conversation involves situational knowledge beyond just the words spoken. Often times, meaning cannot be extrapolated from an exchange merely from its verbal utterances because there are many semantic factors involved in authentic communication. The study of discourse...can involve matters like context, background information or knowledge shared between a speaker and hearer, (Bloor and Bloor 2013). Subcategories of Discourse Discourse can...be used to refer to particular contexts of language use, and in this sense, it becomes similar to concepts like genre or text type. For example, we can conceptualize political discourse (the sort of language used in political contexts) or media discourse (language used in the media). In addition, some writers have conceived of discourse as related to particular topics, such as an environmental discourse or colonial discourse...Such labels sometimes suggest a particular attitude towards a topic (e.g. people engaging in environmental discourse would generally be expected to be concerned with protecting the environment rather than wasting resources). Related to this, Foucault...defines discourse more ideologically as practices which systematically form the objects of which they speak, (Baker and Ellece 2013). Discourse in Social Sciences Within social science...discourse is mainly used to describe verbal reports of individuals. In particular, discourse is analyzed by those who are interested in language and talk and what people are doing with their speech. This approach [studies] the language used to describe aspects of the world and has tended to be taken by those using a sociological perspective, (Ogden 2002). Common Ground Discourse is a joint activity requiring active participation from two or more people, and as such is dependent on the lives and knowledge of two or more people as well as the situation of the communication itself. Herbert Clark applied the concept of common ground to his discourse studies as a way of accounting for the various agreements that take place in successful communication. Discourse is more than a message between sender and receiver. In fact, sender and receiver are metaphors that obfuscate what is really going on in communication. Specific illocutions have to be linked to the message depending on the situation in which discourse takes place...Clark compares language in use with a business transaction, paddling together in a canoe, playing cards or performing music in an orchestra. A central notion in Clarks study is common ground. The joint activity is undertaken to accumulate the common ground of the participants. With common ground is meant the sum of the joint and mutual knowledge, beliefs and suppositions of the participants, (Renkema 2004). Philosphy Of Law Reflection Example
Essays on Philosphy Of Law Reflection Article Reflection Paper Reflection Paper St. Thomas Aquinas described the theory of natural law which has been the of discussion by many philosophers. As Susan Dimock highlights in her article the theory described different concepts of the natural law. The Dimockââ¬â¢s article is a compelling read which discusses the St. Thomas theory in details. From reading it, and applying the concepts in the conversation of Socrates Euthyphro, the reader can analyze how the theory is applied in different situations. Notably, St. Thomas highlighted that reason was the basis of natural law and that law focused on bringing common good to all the individuals. This is evident in the case of Euthyphro pressing charges against his father for murder. In his opinion, the law must ensure justice to all, irrespective of the person who has committed the crime. However, there are evident differences in the way the common good concept is viewed by different philosophers. An additional interesting aspect that emerg es from St. Thomas Aquinas theory is the fact that the individual who makes the law must be one owning the community. For example, God is the maker of the law as He is the creator of all human beings (Dimock, 1999). From the definition of law presented by St. Thomas, the person in authority ensures that the law is binding to the subordinates. This aspect has been evident in different societies. Worth noting is the fact that the law has measures which determine how those in authority impose it on their subordinates. St. Thomas was keen to describe the various kinds of law, namely, eternal law, natural law, human law, and divine law (p. 14). Both readings were critical in increasing my familiarity with the theory of natural law developed by St. Thomas of Aquinas. ReferenceDimock, S. (1999). The Natural Law Theory of St. Thomas Aquinas. How to Host a Website for Beginners (Locally and/or Publicly)
Starting a new website requires a lot of decision-making, not the least of which concerns hosting. If youre new to website ownership, figuring out how to host a website can quickly become both confusing and overwhelming.Fortunately, once you learn about the options available to you, determining what your site needs in terms of hosting is pretty straightforward. Figuring out the basics should set you up to make smart decisions and choose the type of hosting thats best for you and your audience. This post will provide an overview of some web hosting basics, including an explanation of what it is and why its important. Then well discuss the differences between local and externalà hosting and go over some important considerations for using each. We have a lot to cover ââ¬â so lets get to it! setting up a website ââ¬â without it, you have no way to make your site public. Its important to note that there are two ways to host a website: (1) locally, (2) externally/publicly.A locally -hosted website is stored on your own machine, while an externally-hosted site is stored on a providers server. If you already know how you need to host your website, you can jump to more in-depth information now:ðŸââ° How to host a website locallyðŸââ° Host to host a website externallyWhile you may wish to forgo external hosting to save money, local hosting isnt typically powerful enough for even a small website. Your users will experience extremely slow loading times, and your own resources will likely be stretched thin.Instead, local sites are typically used for testing and development or staging and are only seen by the sites owner and/or developer. An externally-hosted copy of the site is then made public for users, backed by a hosting providers much more powerful server.Local and external hosting are often used in conjunction.à However, if you just need a private site for development, you may only require local hosting.à Likewise, if your website is very small and simple,à you can often go without a staging siteà and only use external hosting.Go to topHow to host a website locally (2 methods)There are several methods available for hosting a site locally. Which is best for you will depend on the needs of your particular site, so lets look at two popular options.1. Create a site using a local web stackA local web stack, such as XAMPP, is software that provides several components needed for local development, including a web server. The main benefit of using this method is that it gives you the most control over your site:Additionally, XAMPP keeps your local site completely private, and unavailable to other users.à The downside is that its a bit difficult to set up. Youll need to install XAMPP and manually install WordPress in order to get it up and running. Also, its important to note that, while you can use a WordPress site hosted via XAMPP to test drive plugins or practice coding, you cant use it to create a true staging site. Due to di fferences in hardware configuration, features that work on a XAMPP WordPress installation wont necessarily work on a live WordPress site.2. Sign up for a virtual sandbox environmentA much easier way to create a local WordPress site ââ¬â and to stage your live site ââ¬â is to use a virtual sandbox environment. These platforms, includingà Local by Flywheel, enable you to easily create local WordPress installations:Local by Flywheel is completely free to use. All you have to do is sign up, download the app, and start creating sites. However, youll want to make sure to configure your settings so that your sites arent visible to search engines. Also, keep in mind that while your sites will be hosted locally, youre still technically relying on a third-party resource. In the event that Flywheel stops supporting the platform, you would have to find another solution (although theres no indication that this might happen any time soon).Go to topHow to host a website externally (5 key considerations)When hosting a website externally, everything boils down to one significant decision: which provider to choose. Below, weve outlined five primary aspects to consider when making this choice.1. Determine the best type of hosting for your siteFor WordPress users, there are five main types of hosting to consider:SharedVirtual Private Server (VPS)DedicatedCloudManaged WordPress hostingEach has its pros and cons. Very small sites can often do just fine on a shared hosting plan. However, the other types will give your site plenty of room to grow, and likely provide better performance and more uptime.A WordPress-specific hosting plan can be very useful since it takes some of the work of maintaining your site off your hands. It also usually provides tools or services you would need for your WordPress site anyway, saving you from having to make additional purchases.2. Examine additional features available from various providersIn addition to hosting your website on one of its servers, many hosting providers ââ¬â especially those with managed WordPress plans ââ¬â offer handy features you may want for your site. Some common ones include:Domain name registrationContent delivery network (CDN)SSL certificatesSecurity features such as firewalls or regular scansAutomated backupsExternally-hosted staging areasEmail servicesWordPress hosting plans sometimes also offer access to premium themes, automated WordPress updates, and WordPress-related customer support. Its definitely worth considering which additional features you might need or want for your site.3. Look at different providers customer support optionsCustomer support is a key element of any hosting service. Your relationship with your hosting provider will likely be a long-term one, so its important that its able to provide any help you may need related to your account, server, or even WordPress itself.Self-service support options such as user forums, documentation, or even blog posts can help yo u quickly get past bumps in the road. 24/7 availability is also handy for putting you in touch with support quickly, and helping youà reach someone from your hosts company in the event of a server-related error. If youre looking for more guidance related to customer support, our 2018 WordPress Hosting Survey contains valuable data that you might want to consider. Over 800 WordPress users scored several popular hosts on both their overall and WordPress-specific customer support, so youll know what to expect.4. Set a hosting budget and find a price that works for youHosting is an ongoing expense. Most providers require you to pay monthly fees, although some offer annual plans. Either way, its important to consider what youll be able to afford on a regular basis. There are many affordable hosting options out there. However, as we touched on earlier, the cheaper options sometimes come with other problems. Web hosting is often a you get what you pay for situation.Every sites budget is di fferent, so we cant decide exactly what type of plan is best for you. Our best recommendation is to look for plans that are low cost, while still providing a wide range of features and high performance scores.5. Figure out how youll install WordPress on your providers serverFinally, its always a good idea to consider how youll install WordPress on your new hosting account. While this may seem unimportant at first, your WordPress installation options can make a big difference in the ease of setting up your website. No matter which hosting provider you choose, youll always be able to install WordPress manually. This involves accessing your server via File Transfer Protocol (FTP), using a client such as FileZilla. Some managed WordPress hosts also offer a one-click installation option that enables you to quickly install the software on your account. There are even plans that come with WordPress pre-installed, which is the easiest solution.Go to topConclusionWhen it comes to web hosting, you have a lot to think about. Movie Summary Good Night and Good Luck Essay Example
Movie Summary Good Night and Good Luck Essay ââ¬Å"I think the artist has the right to interpret and re-interpret history and the events of his time (Oliver Stone)â⬠. Discuss this statement with reference to Good Night and Good Luck. George Clooneyââ¬â¢s Good Night and Good Luck is a docudrama set in the 50ââ¬â¢s during the rise of television. A docudrama is a film narrative based on a real time or event. This docudrama follows the true battle between a Mr Edward R. Murrow a well-respected CBS news reporter and Joseph McCarthy a junior senator from Wisconsin, who is blinded by patriotism and obvious hatred for communism. Murrow goes ââ¬Å"straight atâ⬠McCarthy and targets his terrorism towards suspected communists and publicly denotes him for convicting civilians without trial in an era when the fourth estate was only used to ââ¬Å"distract, delude, amuse, and insulateâ⬠and not show the reality of the world. Docudramas can provide a powerful way of showing past events. A docudrama gives the audience a greater insight into the time and events by getting beneath the surface as the artist has the right to remake scenes that were not documented. Critics of docudrama say the medium is merely a form of entertainment and has no credit in being used as a form of education as the director can pick and choose what goes in and scenes has to be fabricated. In the case of Good Night and Good Luck, Clooney gives a balanced view of Murrow, leaving McCarthy and Murrow both losers in the end. The characters appear at Murrowââ¬â¢s press club to be laughing and joking giving the impression of a facade of happiness between the co-workers. In reality, we later learn these reporters are willing to tear each other to shreds and steal each otherââ¬â¢s jobs in order to get to where they want to be. This was a way of life in the fifties where everything had to seem normal and happy on the Movie Summary Good Night and Good Luck Essay Example Movie Summary Good Night and Good Luck Essay The film is relevant and successfully portrays the historical aspects of broadcast journalism in 1950ââ¬â¢s America accurately. Initially shot in color, the film was edited to a black-and-white or grayscale theme in order to match the time period. Clooney also decided to incorporate actual footage of McCarthy presenting his speeches. These clips chronicle McCarthyââ¬â¢s reels and lend historical accuracy to the film. The movie also persists in establishing the ââ¬Å"behind-the-scenesâ⬠of the early days of broadcast. In the headquarters, we see typewriters, heavy smoking, drinking, and episodes of stress that were to be expected in the business. The inner-workings of news and television such as the small space Murrow had between his chair and the camera were also believable. The film was also objective with the presentation of facts and newspapers. They utilized the exact words from the broadcasting between McCarthy and Murrow, and also showed the problems Murrow faced. T hese all contributed to recreating a realistic representation of the time period and the struggles of those who disagreed with McCarthyââ¬â¢s principles. One of the most important questions the film raised was the influence and change of mass media. In the 1950s, the commercial business of the television industry had just begun to expand and grow. By this late 1950s, there were over three million television sets in distributed across American homes, and CBS News had established itself as a credible source of television reporting. However, many television networks were not immune to scrutiny by McCarthy, and it was also true that in order to appease sponsors, many networks censored and avoided any controversial contents. Free Essays on The Lake
The Lake It was early July and my friend Chad and I decided to join his family at the lake. Chadââ¬â¢s family was already up at the lake, and had some extra room in the condo. So we figured, what the hell, we could go for some boating. Right. The lake the only about a two-hour drive away. We were driving in Chadââ¬â¢s fatherââ¬â¢s convertible sports car, so the drive was quite pleasant. We drove through twisting canyons and long straight roads going just slightly over the speed limit. We arrived at our destination at record-breaking time, which didnââ¬â¢t seem to make his parents too happy. Along with Chadââ¬â¢s family, which consists of four brothers and one sister, were some neighbor friends of theirs and their five-year-old son Nick. The rest of the day was spent miniature golfing and playing catch with Chadââ¬â¢s little brothers. On the following morning we went with Chadââ¬â¢s parents to rent the boat. We got the boat and loaded it up with the gear. We broke the family into groups so each one could have their own time on the boat. Our group was the one that wanted to ski, wake board, ride on the tube, and throw each other off the tube. The other group consisted of people that either didnââ¬â¢t want to ski or were too young. All the younger kids were in this group. Our group was the first to have the boat. We spent hours and hours out on the lake and had an awesome time, even though I got one of the worst sunburns in my life. We returned with the boat so the other group could take their turn. As the second group left on the boat we decided to just go lounge in the swimming pool. After about a half-hour, Chadââ¬â¢s mom came running in and said they had an accident with the boat and that little Nick was knocked unconscious. We ran from the pool to see what exactly happened. Chadââ¬â¢s sister told us that another boat was traveling way too ... Project Management (Palm Jumeirah Island) Case Study
Project Management (Palm Jumeirah Island) - Case Study Example We will also provide an in-depth analysis using management theories of the case of Palm Jumeirah Island project, debating on the ways in which the project was implemented and planned, how it was created, the problems it faced that led to its downfall and the upcoming consequences of it. Before going further into the discussion, let us look at Dubai and the importance of Jumeirah Palm being located there. The strategies employed in the creation of this project in Dubai have been embraced to expand the economy, especially the urban economy, striving for international city status and promoting the development of large scale projects. The formation of mega global projects afforded Dubai international status and attention as a country which attracts foreign visitors from different parts around the world (Azzam, 2002). The city in doing this, started to construct huge national real estate companies, embracing mega projects policy focusing on finance from the government, global and GCC investors (Taher & Hajjar, 2013). This led to the development of large transformation in the Dubai economy and population. The Dubai coastline is considered one of the man-made features in the world to be visible from space, making it ââ¬Ëthe eighth wonder of the worldââ¬â¢ (Boermeester, 2015). The creation of Jumeirah Palm Island remains one of largest urban operations that have been carried out in the last years in the world. Although the Jumeirah Palm Island has received praise from all over the world, its downfall has been evident with management including planning, designing and implementation theories. According to Malkin (2001), there have been plumbing issues at Jumeirah Palm Island and residents have been forced to visit lavatories in a mall and wash in the sea after a pipe in one of the apartments ruptured. There have been other issues with Jumeirah Palm Island that have caused its downfall ranging from poor
